It’s official: The Downsview Hangars in North York, ON will be demolished, despite the best efforts of heritage advocates and a promising redevelopment proposal for adaptive reuse.
You would think that designation at the federal level would offer a higher degree of protection, but unfortunately, unlike municipally and provincially designated properties, federal designation has no legal status in Canada.
Unfortunately, federally owned buildings are exempt from provincial legislation like the Ontario Heritage Act, leaving some of our most significant buildings exposed to neglect and demolition.

That’s tragic. At least Urban Flute got there in time. More than one way to preserve this property:
